This Is Not a Joke So Please Stop Smiling - If You've Only Watched That Peggy and Don Scene Once...
Watch it again and embrace the heartbreak:
I thought about this scene throughout the day and each time I did Jeff Tweedy's beautifully broken voice singing "This is not a joke so please stop smiling" was the soundtrack.
Peggy and Don's feelings aren't at all romantic but Wilco's "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" captures the back and forth between these two characters who from the first season have had a stake in one another. To see them part ways and with such restraint was the most moving scene of the season thus far (and there's only two episodes left).
So of course I went in search of a great live version of the song to punctuate my point with and found one from Letterman.
I am an American aquarium drinker
I assassin down the avenue
I'm hiding out in the big city blinking
What was I thinking when I let go of you
Let's forget about the tongue-tied lightning
Let's undress just like cross-eyed strangers
This is not a joke so please stop smiling
What was I thinking when I said it didn't hurt
Isn't this exactly that moment when Don kisses Peggy's hand put to music? Or do you totally disagree and think the scene had a very different feel to it?
Here's the studio version if you want to really get lost in it.
